Bulgaria's Govt Allots BGN 20 M for Sofia Subway

Bulgaria

The government will fund the expansion of Sofia subway by the end of the year with additional BGN 20 M, it emerged after a meeting of the prime minister with the mayor of the capital. Estimates show that EUR 228 M will be invested in constructing the stretches Mladost 1 - Mladost 4 and Mladost 1 - Druzhba to Sofia airport from 2007-2015.

Bulgarian government vowed to assist financially the extension and completion of the Sofia subway project at the beginning of the year. The government has already supported the subway extension project by signing in February 2002 a guarantee agreement between the Japanese Bank for International Cooperation and the Sofia Municipality. The credit line stood at USD 104,034,210, payable for 30 years and a 10-year grace period.

The funds are being invested in constructing the most complicated section of the subway route, stretching from Saint Nedelya square to Dragan Tsankov boulevard. The total length of all routes to complete the Sofia subway is seen to reach 54 km and be serviced by 48 stations. The key transportation means is expected to carry about 1 million people daily.
