152 school buildings all across Bulgaria will be renovated before the start of 2005/2006 school year, the Press Office of the Council of Ministers announced. This year the government provides BGN 33M for the insulation of schools. The funds will be used to remove leaks in the roofs, to renew heat and ventilation installations, to put additional heat insulation, new woodwork, to provide access to the buildings for children with disabilities.
15 000 m2 woodwork has been put in schools so far, and it will double in the next few weeks. The reconstruction of the roofs and the repairs of the heat and ventilation installations are expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Some of the schools that will be renovated with the funds allocated by the government are: M. Raikovich secondary school in the town of Lyaskovets, Angel Kunchev secondary school in Strazhitsa, St Cyril and Methodius elementary school in Gabrovo, Vassil Levski elementary school in Sevlievo, etc.
According to the National Statistical Institute in school year 2003/2004, there are 2 823 schools and vocational high schools in the country.
The Strategic guidelines for the implementation of projects on the energy efficiency insulation of school buildings, adopted by the Council of Ministers on 17 February 2005, set the criteria for determining the eligible schools. These criteria are expenses for heating and electricity for the last year, secondary schools, vocational high schools and others in district and municipal centres, the existence of prepared objects or reconstruction research of the school.
